In the past we wrote about some of the strangest traffic laws in Canada, but this week we’re going to highlight some of the weirdest laws about driving from all around the world.
Whether these laws are due to antiquated legal systems, foolish drivers or very passionate lawmakers they might be good to know if ever driving in a foreign country. Or if you ever decide to tie your alligator, elephant, or goat to a parking meter in Florida. Which is legal, as long as you pay for parking.
1) In Denmark it is illegal to start your car with someone underneath it. That seems … practical.
2) In Spain, cars can only park on the side of the road where the building numbers are uneven.
3) In Thailand it is illegal to drive without a shirt on. This applies to men and women, no matter what you’re driving, be it bike, car or tuk tuk.
4) You’ve probably heard of Germany’s autobahn, where there’s no speed limit. This means braking or stopping for any reason is illegal. Also illegal: running out of gas. Keep your tank full!
5) In Alabama it’s illegal to drive while blindfolded. We’re curious what had to happen to make this into a law.
6) In Costa Rica you are allowed to drink while driving. Yes, that means alcohol. However, if you’re Blood Alcohol Concentration reaches .75 then it is illegal. We like our law where you just can’t drink while driving at all.
7) In Russia it is illegal to have a dirty car. There is no definition of dirty, it is up to the officer’s discretion.
8) In Massachusetts, you can take a gorilla for a ride in your car. BUT, it has to sit in the passenger seat.
9) In the United Arab Emirates, camels have the right of way and you must yield to them. Similarly, in South Africa if you don’t slow down or stop for herds of animals crossing the road, you face stiff fines.
Some of these might make you grateful for our own traffic laws which, for the most part, make sense and are easy to understand.
