Aside from the obvious ding to your vehicle which results from an accident, if you were charged by the police for causing it, it could result in being double dinged by your insurance provider.
Ding #1 – Being charged with an HTA traffic offence by police for causing the accident will result in an insurance hike. A major conviction could result in your insurance being cancelled altogether.
Ding #2 – Another hike in your premiums because you now have an “at fault” accident against you. This could result in another increase of up to 80% being added to your premium depending on the amount of damage.
If you’ve caused the accident, then a premium hike can be expected. If you’ve caused the accident and are charged with an HTA offence by a police officer, you can expect an ADDITIONAL hike of your premiums should you elect to simply pay the ticket. Most insurance companies raise your premium for causing the accident, and AGAIN for being charged and convicted for causing the accident. This is known as the Double Ding!
